Olympic bronze medallist Yekaterina Poistogova and Yuriy Borzakovskiy were the standout performers at the ‘Cup of the Head of the Republic of Chuvashiya’, a new athletics tournament that was launched this weekend in the town of Novocheboksarsk.
Naturally, 2004 Olympic champion Borzakovskiy was again the main attraction of the meeting. A week after winning the 1000m in Yekaterinburg, he once again coasted to victory, this time over his specialist distance of 800m. With his trademark finishing speed, he stopped the clock in 1:50.03 to finish ahead of Stepan Poistogov (1:50.83).
Poistogov’s wife fared even better in the women’s equivalent. Poistogova’s time of 2:01.43 is the fastest time in the world so far in what is admittedly a very early stage of the indoor season.
Just as dominant was Yelena Korobkina in the 3000m. The former European junior champion improved her indoor PB to 8:51.87 – also an early-season world leading performance. The men’s 3000m was won by Rinas Akhmadeyev in 8:02.89.
Elizaveta Savlinis, a Russian team member at the 2011 World Championships and 2012 Olympics, won the 200m in 23.55 ahead of European 400m silver medallist Kseniya Zadorina (23.86).
In the absence of world record-holder Yelena Isinbayeva, who is skipping the indoor season, Anzhelika Sidorova won the Pole Vault and added 10cm to her indoor PB with a 4.50m clearance.
The women's 2000m Steeplechase is rarely held indoors, but here Albina Chinchikeyeva was the winner in 6:21.88.
