Top high school runners ready to shine at MHSAA LP XC Finals

by Dave McCauley,

Saturday, November 3, is the date for the 2012 MHSAA Lower Peninsula Cross Country Finals to be held on the grounds of the Michigan International Speedway near Brooklyn, Michigan. Top individuals and teams from all divisions, both boys and girls, will be on hand competing for individual All-State honors and State Champion titles along with State Champion team titles.

Michigan is very well represented by some of the best high school runners in the country, both boys and girls. In Division One girls, top ranked teams such as Saline, Birmingham Seaholm and Grosse Pointe South have been ranked in the top three most of the year and look to battle it out for the team title on Saturday at MIS. Grosse Pointe South won the D1 title in 2011.

Individually in D1, some of the nation's top runners will be competing, with previous National Champions Erin Finn from West Bloomfield and Hannah Meier of Grosse Pointe South ready to fight it out again this year for the overall title.

For the boys in D1, the top two ranked team heading into the finals were Highland-Milford and Romeo.

In D2, top ranked teams include Ada-Forest Hills Eastern for the girls and St. Clair for the boys. Teams ranked near the top of D3 after the final week of the season were Grandville Calvin-Christian's girls and Marlette's boys. And in D4, teams near the top of the rankings included Harbor Springs and North Muskegon for the girls and Concord on the boy's side along with Pewamo-Westphalia and Saugatuck.

The fastest time at the 2011 LP XC Finals was turned in by West Bloomfield's Erin Finn, taking the overall victory in the D1 race with a time of 17:22.6. Julia Bos's 17:24.7 was tops for the girls in D2.

For the boys in 2011, the top time was run by Chelsea High's Bryce Bradley, winning the D2 race in 15:20.6.

The fastest boy's time ever run at MIS for the state meet for 5K was 14:10.4 by Rockford's Dathan Ritzenhein back in the fall of 2000. Ritzenhein, for you marathon fans, recently turned in a 2:07:47 performance at the Chicago Marathon this past October. Ritzenhein also represented the U.S. at this year's London Olympic Games.

The best girl's time ever run for the 5K course at MIS was 16:54.8 by Rochester's Megan Goethal's in 2009. Goethals currently runs for the University of Washington and was the National Runner-Up for 5000 meters at the 2012 NCAAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

If you can't make it to the meet, will be providing live text updates throughout the day, along with our full meet coverage from MIS including photos, interviews, results and much more!
