Calvin Cross Country Teams Claim UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational Titles

OSHKOSH, WI - The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams had banner performances on Saturday as both teams took first place at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational.
On the men’s side, sixth-ranked Calvin finished ahead of top-ranked North Central as the Knights recorded 52 points, six points ahead of North Central’s total of 58 points. Wisconsin-Eau Claire, ranked 25th, took third with 93 points while third-ranked Washington of Missouri took fourth with 127 points.
On the women’s side, eighth-ranked Calvin took first place with a team score of 91 points while 16th-ranked Chicago took second (114 points), 10th-ranked Wisconsin-Eau Claire third (115 points) and 23rd-ranked Hope fourth (172 points).
Senior Dan Kerr led the charge for the Calvin men, placing second with a time of 24:49, finishing a half-second behind race winner Noah Droddy of DePauw. Senior Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS) also cracked the top 10 with an eighth place time of 25:17. The Knights then packed up senior David VandeBunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) in 13th (26:57), junior Sam Kerk (Hartland, WI/Lake Country Lutheran HS) in 14th (25:27) and senior Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) in 15th (25:30). Rounding out Calvin’s top seven were sophomore Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) in 49th (26:01) and sophomore Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) in 65th (26:09) while senior Kevin Peterson (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) took 66th (26:09).
The Calvin women were led by senior Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) who placed sixth in 21:54 while junior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was 14th (22:23).
Sophomore Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a strong race, finishing 19th (22:41) while sophomore Lizzy Vannette (Visalia, CA/Central Valley Christian HS) was 23rd (22:46) and freshman McKenzie Diemer (Caledonia/South Christian HS) 29th (22:52). Rounding out Calvin’s top seven were sophomore Paige McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) in 48th (23:18) and senior Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN/Centennial HS)) in 54th (23:20). Sophomore Sarah Danner (Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS) was also 58th (23:22).
“We really had a great day with both of our teams,” said Calvin head cross country coach Brian Diemer. “I am so pleased with how both of our teams stepped up under adverse weather conditions. Our runners left any excuses on the bus and came to compete. This was a nice stepping-stone for our program this year.”
Calvin also sent teams to the Manchester Invitational on Saturday. On the women’s side, Calvin took third with 60 points. On the men’s side, Calvin took third with 62 points. Sophomore Nick McKee (Arlington Hts, IL/John Hersey HS) was Calvin’s top finisher in the men’s race, placing seventh in 26:51. Senior Hannah Kregel (Iowa City, IA/Iowa City HS) was the top finisher for the Calvin women, placing ninth in 23:47.
Both teams will now prepare for the MIAA Championships, slated to be held October 27 with Albion College serving as host.
