GUELPH, Ontario (10/13/2012) -- Some fast times is just what the Titans were looking for as the men's cross country team claimed 10th with 243 points at the 3rd Annual New Balance Vic Matthews Open, held at the University of Guelph Arboretum Cross Country course in Guelph, Ontario.
“We have been working on getting out better and it paid off,” said Guy Murray, UDM Director of track & field and cross country. “We are doing a very good job of working hard at the middle part of the race and both Marty (Nelkie) and Bob (Radlich) are leading that charge.”
The race is the largest cross country event in Canada and featured a number of the country's top teams and runners, including a pair of Olympians.
All five Titans who ran in the event last year finished with better times than 2011, led by sophomore Colin Creagh's 25:09 effort for 29th. As a freshman, he was 89th in 26:47.
“It was a big breakthrough for Colin and one that we knew he was capable of so that is a great to get it ahead of the Horizon League Championship,” said Coach Murray.
Junior Martin Nelkie was 47th in 25:35, better than 30 seconds over his 2011 run, while senior Bob Radlich earned 51st in 25:46, nearly a minute improvement over his 26:38 tally last season.
Senior Edwin Gay was the fourth Titan in at 25:57, 57th overall, while sophomore Ryan Hofsess was just in back of his teammate for 59th.
Sophomore George Holman crossed the finish line in 26:01 for 61st, while sophomore Ylli Alla came in 70th with a 26:25 run.
The Titans will now have two weeks to put the finishing touches on their training before the Horizon League Championship, set for Oct. 27 at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course in Kenosha, Wisc.
