Betsie Valley Run 2012 Recap
Sunday October 7 was overcast with no wind, slight precipitation and a temperature of 51 degrees, perfect conditions for distance running at the Betsie Valley Run in Thompsonville, Michigan.
The seventh annual race took place at Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa and saw 271 participants of all ages running and walking the surrounding roads and trails in support of the Betsie Valley Library.
Consisting of a half-marathon (13.1 miles), 10K (6.2 miles), 5K (3.1 miles), and a child's mile the Betsie Valley Run is a mainstay of the community, helping local children have access to learning and technology.
Winners in the 5K were Miguel Alvarado of Rapid City in 18:11 and Klaudia O'Malley of McBain in 21:59. In the 10K Jason Johnson of Traverse City finished first in 37:15 with Theresa Hunt, also of Traverse City, the first female in 46:47.
For the signature half-marathon distance John Graham of Tekonsha ran an excellent 1:24:36 (a 6:28 per mile pace), followed by Steven Mast of Traverse City in 1:26:51. Tasha O'Malley of McBain crossed the line in 1:28:45 (6:47 per mile) as the first woman in the half, and was closely followed by Renee Sirois of Grand Rapids in 1:29:24.
"We got an email about the race and came up and made a weekend of it" said Jodi and Rick Hall of Grand Rapids, who along with their two children Sean and Ashland stayed at Crystal Mountain. "Absolutely we'd recommend this race. Not a ton of people, nice relatively flat course and only one hill in the 5K."
Race director Russ Smith was pleased with the turnout which saw people come from all over Michigan and surrounding states to participate. "This event is truly a community effort with many volunteers faithfully helping each year. The race shows off the natural beauty of the area as nothing else can" says Smith.
