Northville, Mich. -- Wayne State University head cross country coach Rick Cummins has been excited about the influx of youth and conversely depth to his two teams for 2012-13 and it didn't take long for the new runners to impress. The Wayne State women's cross country squad took home a solid second-place finish (49 points) at Saturday's 26th Annual Running Fit-Detroit Titan Invitational at Cass-Benton Park.
Sophomore Amanda Brewer (Ionia, Mich. / Ionia) ripped through the course in a time of 18:53, which was good for third place overall and got the Warriors rolling. Brewer improved her finish by 14 spots after a 17th place showing in last years run. Coach Cummins was impressed by Brewer, "Amanda is figuring out how to be a college athlete, we are off to a solid start."
The freshmen twin duo of Chelsea Johnson and Brittany Johnson (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford) gave the Warriors their next finishers at 13th and 14th respectively with times of 19:15 and 19:16.
Rounding out the Wayne State runners in the top 25 overall were juniors Kayla Gagnon (Riverview, Mich. / Riverview) at 16th with a time of 19:26, Olivia Kwiatkowski (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) at 18th three seconds back and Rachael Williams (Plainwell, Mich. / Delton Kellogg) in 22nd at 19:39.
