ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Oakland men's and women's cross country teams released its 2012 schedule on Monday, announced head coach Paul Rice on Friday. The Golden Grizzlies will host two meets this season, the annual Golden Grizzly Open on Aug. 31 and The Summit League Championships on Oct. 28.
"I am very excited about this schedule," said Rice. "I decided to switch things up a bit this fall and return to some meets we haven't competed in for several years. Of course we are also excited to be hosting two meets this fall, especially the league championships. This will be a great schedule for our young team and also a great way for our seniors to close their careers."
OU will begin the season by hosting the annual Golden Grizzly Open on Aug. 31. Last season, Lia Jones won the 4K event with a time of 14:09.4, followed by Brittni Hutton with a time of 14:36.5. For the men, Anthony Sterzick finished the 6K event in seventh place with a time 20:02.4 and Jake Magier earned a time of 20:25.2
Oakland will be hosting the 2012 Summit League Cross Country Championships on the campus of OU. It will mark the first time that Oakland has hosted the league championship meets since 2004 where three Oakland athletes earned selections to the all-league teams.
The Golden Grizzlies will travel to four in-state meets this season including the Spartan Invitational, hosted by Michigan State on Sept. 14, the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Calvin College on Oct. 5, the Western Michigan Invite hosted by Western Michigan on Oct. 12 and the EMU Invite, hosted by Eastern Michigan on Nov. 1.
Oakland will also travel out of state early in the season as they hit the road to the IPFW Invite, hosted by Fort Wayne on Sept. 8 and the Loyola Invitational, hosted by Loyola in Chicago Ill., on Sept. 29. The Golden Grizzlies will also travel to the NCAA Great Lakes Regional in Madison, Wis., hosted by the University of Wisconsin on Nov. 9.
"We are very much looking forward to the regionals this year," added Rice. "We get a chance to compete at Wisconsin's home course as they were national champions last year, so that will be a great experience for our kids."
Last season, the Golden Grizzlies finished the season with three All-Summit League selections, including Hutton, who finished fourth at the league meet to earn her second straight first-team honor, and Jones, who finished 11th at the league meet for her second consecutive all-league selection.
