U of M women - Michigan Lands Six on USTFCCCA All-Academic Team

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Six members of the University of Michigan women's track and field team received All-Academic honors for the 2012 season, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced on Wednesday (July 25).
Recent U-M graduate Mary Grace Pellegrini (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual), junior Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven), freshman Brook Handler (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester), sophomore Taylor Pogue (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich), junior/sophomore Jillian Smith (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) and junior/sophomore Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) were each honored by the USTFCCCA.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
During her final outdoor season, Pellegrini qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, where she finished 20th in the 10,000-meter run. She was also an Academic All-Big Ten selection and a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
Addison was a two-time indoor All-American this season, earning first team honors in the 800-meter run and second team accolades in the distance medley relay. She also defended her Big Ten title in the indoor 800-meter run and helped U-M win its ninth straight Big Ten DMR title. During outdoor season, she scored points for the Wolverines in the 800- and 1,500-meter runs at the conference meet.
In her freshman season, Handler finished sixth in the 800-meter run at the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
During the indoor season, Pogue clocked the 36th-fastest 5,000-meter time in the country and finished 17th at the Big Ten Championships. She was also recognized as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
Smith was a three-time All-American second teamer this season, earning honors in the indoor 800-meter race and distance medley relay, as well as the outdoor 1,500-meter run. She finished runner-up in the indoor 800-meter run and helped U-M capture its ninth straight Big Ten DMR title. Smith finished runner-up in the 1,500-meter run at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships and went on to place 13th at the NCAA Championships. She was also an Academic All-Big Ten selection and a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
Tobel earned two All-America honors in the pole vault, landing on the first team at the NCAA Indoor Championships and the second team at outdoor nationals. The outdoor Big Ten runner-up set school records in the indoor and outdoor pole vault. Tobel was also an Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
