Jager breaks American record at Monaco

Provided by USATF

Evan Jager capped off American performances with a bang as the Samsung Diamond League made its ninth stop Friday in Monaco.

2012 Olympic bound steeplechaser Evan Jager ran with his sights set on beating the American record of 8:08.82 set by Daniel Lincoln in 2006. Hurdling over the final barrier, Jager sprinted down the straightaway and crossed the finish line in third with a time of 8:06.81 to become to new 3,000m steeplechase American record holder. The recent Olympic Trials champion, it was just the fifth time in his career Jager had competed in the event.

American hurdlers had another strong showing in the 110m hurdles as Aries Merritt won the event in 12.93. With another sub-13 second performance, Merritt looks primed for the Olympic Games. Fellow Team USA member Jason Richardson finished second in 13.07 as David Oliver and Jeff Porter finished 4th and 5th, respectively.

Jesse Williams had another close competition in the high jump against Robbie Grabarz of Great Britain. With the bar at 2.36m, Williams and Grabarz were the only remaining jumpers but both failed to clear the height. With fewer misses, Williams took home first place with a jump of (2.33m/7-7.75).
