What's up for the weekend? Celebrate the start of summer and find a race near you

By RunMichigan.com Staff

Well it's the first official weekend of the Summer of 2012! From looking at the weather, it appears temps will cool off a touch and be a lot more manageable for some great racing and faster times across our state.

An event that has become a Detroit area tradition over the last 10 years takes place in Northville this Saturday and another great turnout is expected.

The 10th Annual Solstice Run includes a 10 Mile, 10K, 5K Run and "Maui Mile". This Hawaiian themed event also features live entertainment, bands & DJ; clowns; Hawaiian Dance performances, great food & beverages buffet and an Outdoor Sponsor Expo on race day. There is still time to register! For more information, check out the RMDC Calendar.

RunMichigan.com will be at the Solstice Run for some great coverage, including photos and interviews, so be sure to come back and visit RMDC after the race!

One of the state's more scenic races will take place on Saturday in Charlevoix. The 2012 Charlevoix Marathon, 5k and Half Marathon goes off at 7:00 a.m. If you're in the area, cheer on some dedicated runners as they enjoy the race that starts and finishes near the drawbridge in downtown Charlevoix and travels along the coast of Lake Michigan. RunMichigan.com will also be on hand at this year's Charlevoix Marathon, so check back after the race for photos and interviews.

Two exciting races will take place in Downtown Detroit -- one this Saturday and one on Sunday.

On Saturday, June 23, it's the DMC Detroit River Days 5K. This third annual event which is presented by the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, begins on the Detroit Riverwalk near the Milliken State Park and Harbor. Proceeds benefit the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy, the stewards of Detroit’s historic and international RiverWalk and Dequindre Cut Greenway. This 5K run and walk will showcase the Detroit Riverwalk and Milliken State Park. Entertainment and a costume contest add to the fun of this race, a part of the 2012 Detroit River Days Festival.

On Sunday, come back to downtown Detroit for the Heart of Detroit 10K, 5K and 1 Mile. Also Sunday, check out the Clawson Freedom Run.

Other races to check out this weekend include the Linden Summer Happenings 5K on Sunday, June 24 in Linden, Michigan, the Asha-Detroit 5K Trail Run in Milford, Michigan and the Zeeland Zoom 5K in Zeeland, Michigan. Visit the RunMichigan.com Calendar for more information.

Also, be sure and keep an eye on all the top USA Track and Field athletes with ties to our state as they compete over the next couple weeks at the USA Olympic Track and Field Trials being held in Eugene, Oregon. Hopefully we'll have additional Track and Field athletes with Michigan connections competing at the 2012 London Olympics!

Have a great weekend everyone. Good luck in your racing and enjoy your running!
