DePalma, Smith & 4x400 Grab Three More All-America Honors for SHU

MARION, Ind. -- Siena Heights pole vaulter Richard DePalma (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven) was runner-up after losing in a jump-off while the Saints' 4x400-meter relay team also placed second -- and DePalma, the 4x400 foursome and marathoner Brett Smith (Linden, Mich./Lake Fenton) claimed All-America honors -- on day three of the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Indiana Wesleyan.
DePalma reached a height of 5.05 meters to tie Indiana Tech's Igor Morales for the top spot before falling in the "overtime."
Matt Leaders (Hillsdale, Mich./Hillsdale) added a 14th-place finish in the pole vault with a height of 4.60 meters.
Smith clocked in at a school-record time of 2:34.43.30 in the marathon to place seventh while Jesiah Rodriguez (Erie, Mich./Erie Mason) took 12th in the 1,500.
In the 4x400, Ryan McElyea (Flint, Mich./Carman Ainsworth), Anton Darby (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Anderson), Logan Moore (Southgate, Mich./Anderson) and Doug Dawson (Roseville, Mich./Roseville) combined for a school-record time of 3:10.86, finishing second to the winning relay from Wayland Baptist (Texas), which crossed the line in 3:08.46.
In the team scoring, Siena Heights tied for 11th with 25 points while national champ Shorter (Ga.) accumulated 93.
Ryan Hopson (Albion, Mich./Albion) and Chris Schurr (Byron Center, Mich./Byron Center) also competed on Saturday in the triple jump and pole vault, respectively.
