LSSU - Balczak finishes third in NCAA decathlon

PUEBLO, Colo. - Lake Superior State freshman Justin Balczak earned All-America honors after finishing third in the men's decathlon at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Colorado State-Pueblo.
Balczak was third following the first day of competition and remained consistently strong during Friday's final five events. Patrick Smith of Chico State won the decathlon with 7,366 points, followed by Darius Walker of Central Missouri State with 7,185 and Balczak with 7,072.
On Friday, Balczak finished second in the decathlon 110-meter hurdles, third in the discus throw and javelin, and overcame a 10th-place finish in the pole vault. His 1,500-meter run results were not available.
Also on Friday, Leslie Mitchell qualified for the finals in the women's 200-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles, and Shashawna Bennett qualified in the 110-meter hurdles.
Mitchell was sixth in the 110-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of :13.67, while Bennett was eighth in :13.77. Mitchell finished eighth in the 200-meter dash preliminaries with a time of :23.97.
The NCAA DII Outdoor Championships conclude Saturday. Ben Charbonneau (javelin), Jason Brenton (triple jump), Mitchell (100 dash, 200 dash, 110 hurdles) and Bennett (110 hurdles) will compete on the final day.
