U of M Women - Addison, Smith Secure Spots in 1,500m Quarterfinals at East Prelims

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The duo of junior Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven) and junior/sophomore Jillian Smith (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) led the University of Michigan women's track and field team on the opening day of the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds on Thursday (May 24) at the University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium. The pair qualified for the quarterfinals of the 1,500-meter run.
Addison and Smith finished almost simultaneously in times of 4:21.83 and 4:21.87, respectively, to finish fourth and fifth in the first round. The two will compete in the quarterfinals on Saturday (May 26) at 6:45 p.m. The top five athletes in each of the two heats, plus the next two fastest times, will advance to the NCAA Championships, which are set for June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Sophomore Amber Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood) clocked a time of 1:00.82 in the 400-meter hurdles to finish 37th. The dual-event qualifier will return to compete in the 100-meter hurdles tomorrow (Friday, May 25) at 5:30 p.m.
In her final collegiate meet, senior Mary Grace Pellegrini (Louisville, Ky./DuPont Manual) ran to a 20th-place finish in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:28.27.
In the field, fifth-year seniors Emily Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore) and Allison Liske (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East) represented the Maize and Blue in the shot put. Pendleton finished 33rd with a toss of 14.54 meters (47-8.50), while Liske fouled all three attempts and did not place. Pendleton is the only U-M athlete to qualify in three events and will return to compete in the discus tomorrow at 11 a.m. and the hammer throw on Saturday (May 26) at 2 p.m. Liske will also join Pendleton in the discus tomorrow.
Other Wolverines in action tomorrow will include sophomore Alex Leptich (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as well as junior/sophomore Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) and freshman Victoria Wesley (Marine City, Mich./Marine City) in the pole vault.
