INDIANAPOLIS -- Sophomore Eric Lewis (Eastpointe,MI/Fraser) of the University of Detroit Mercy men's track and field team is headed to the Preliminary Round and the East Regional of the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships in Jacksonville, FL on May 24-26.
The hammer thrower had a toss of 58.23m (191-00) at the Last Chance Meet at Grand Valley State on Saturday. With the top 48 advancing to the East Regional Championships, the last throw for Lewis was the 49th best mark overall and just shy of 48. Declarations were made by coaches on Wednesday for the event and adjustments were made Thursday due to scratches or other reasons and Lewis is now 43rd and will head to Jacksonville.
The latest hammer throw for Lewis set a new University of Detroit Mercy record, the second for him during the 2011-12 season. Earlier this year in February, Lewis also set a school record and a first place finish in the weight throw at 17.67m (57-11.75) in the Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships at Youngstown State on Feb. 25-26.
Since 2003 when the regional format was established for the NCAA championships, the Detroit Titans have had a representative from either the men's or women's team compete every season.
