GVSU Laker Men Win Four Events at Gina Relays

Hillsdale, Mich./Ashland, Ohio - The 19th-ranked Grand Valley State men's track and field team competed at both the Hillsdale Gina Relays and Ashland Alumni Open on Saturday (Apr. 28), coming away with seven provisional qualifying marks between the two meets.
On the final day of the Gina Relays, GVSU won four events, including two relays.
In the 200 meter dash, freshman Jesse Schwartz (Centreville, Mich.) was the victor with a time of 22.01 seconds. In the 400, it was sophomore Nathaniel Hammersmith (Stryker, Ohio/Archbold) winning with a time of 48.10 seconds.
Hammersmith was also part of both relay teams that took the top spot in Hillsdale. In the 4x100 meter relay, Hammersmith and Schwartz teamed with senior Xavier Parnell (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) and freshman Brent VanEnk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian) to cross the line first with a time of 41.22 seconds.
Hammersmith then teamed with freshman Daniel Pung (Hudsonville, Mich./Zeeland West), sophomore Mohamed Mohamed (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) and sophomore Logan Hoffman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia) to win the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:16.82.
In the 5,000 meter run, junior Steve Fuelling (Milford, Mich.) hit a provisional qualifying mark of 14:24.14, his top time of the outdoor season.
In the pole vault competition, a trio of Lakers hit provisional qualifying marks, all clearing a height of 4.80 meters. Junior Raphael Gelo (Kabetogama, Minn./Bemidji State) finished fourth, junior Kevin Leland (Greenville, Ohio) was fifth and freshman Bret Myers (Sunbury, Ohio/Big Walnut) was sixth. Only Leland's finish was an improvement over his respective prior mark.
Some of the Lakers' top field athletes competed at the Ashland Alumni Open, led by a pair of student-athletes to hit provisional marks in the high jump. Redshirt freshman Trent Chappell (Jenison, Mich.) finished second with a height of 2.11 meters, while sophomore Patrick Livengood (Carpentersville, Ill./Dundee-Crown) placed fourth with a leap of 2.06 meters.
In the shot put, junior Donny Stiffler (Webberville, Mich./Williamston) finished sixth with a provisional mark of 16.56 meters.
The Lakers will now get ready for the GLIAC Championships this upcoming week. GVSU will be hosting the meet at the GVSU Track & Field/Lacrosse Stadium May 2nd-4th.
