GVSU Women Hit Eight Provisional Marks at Al Owens Classic

Allendale, Mich. - The second-ranked Grand Valley State women's track and field team finished up competition at the Al Owens Classic on Saturday (Apr. 21) at the GVSU Track & Field/Lacrosse Stadium. Freshman Victoria Schiller (Grand Ledge, Mich.) hit a new GVSU record in the heptathlon, totaling 4287 points to finish in second.

Senior Karie McDonald (Frankenmuth, Mich.) won the 1,500 meter run with a provisional qualifying time of 4:30.20, the lone winner for GVSU on the final day of competition.

Freshman Brittney Banister (Flint, Mich./Carman-Ainsworth) had a pair of top five finishes on the day. Banister finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.98 seconds, then hit a provisional qualifying mark in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.36 seconds, good for a fifth-place finish.

A pair of Lakers had solid showings in the 100 meter hurdles. Sophomore Kalena Franklin (West Branch, Mich./Ogemaw-Heights) finished third with a time of 14.16 seconds, good enough for a provisional mark. Senior Jade Hull (Grandville, Mich.) finished fourth in the event with a time of 14.43 seconds, improving on her previous season-best in the event. Hull just missed out on a provisional time by .03 seconds.

Sophomore Lisa Galasso (Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) had the final individual provisional running mark of the day, finishing third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.45.

The Laker relay teams hit two provisional marks, though neither were an improvement on the previous bests set by GVSU this outdoor season. The team of freshman Carly Scott (Schoolcraft, Mich.), sophomore Brittney Jackson (Highland Hts., Ohio/Laurel), freshman Michaela Lewis (Flint, Mich./Central) and Banister finished third in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 46.81 seconds. In the 4x400 meter relay, Hull, Franklin, senior Adrienne Chandler (Okemos, Mich.) and Banister combined for a time of 3:48.35 to finish second in the event.

Two throwers for the Lakers hit provisional marks of their own, as well. Senior Lauren Buresh (Stanwood, Mich./Morley-Stanwood) came in second in the shot put with a mark of 14.45 meters, while junior Jamie Smith (Hickory Corners, Mich./Gull Lake) finished seventh with a provisional mark of 44.49 meters in the discus.

The GVSU track and field team will travel to two locations next weekend. Some of the student-athletes will travel to Hillsdale for the Hillsdale Relays on Friday (Apr. 27) and Saturday (Apr. 28), while others will travel to Ashland, Ohio on Saturday.
