Wolverines Claim Four Event Titles at GVSU's Al Owens Classic

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- Sophomore Amber Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood) won the 400-meter hurdles and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles as the University of Michigan women's track and field team finished the second day of competition at the Al Owens Classic held at Grand Valley State University today (Saturday, April 21). The Wolverines dominated the field events, winning the shot put, pole vault and discus.
Smith won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:00.76 after placing second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.05 seconds. She won her preliminary heat with a time of 14.01 seconds. Smith suffered defeat in the final to Lake Superior State's Sashawna Bennett, who clocked a time of 13.77 seconds.
The Wolverines placed four competitors in the top eight of the discus, with junior Erin Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore) winning the competition with a toss of 53.93 meters. She bested her sister, fifth-year senior Emily Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore), who registered a throw at 53.53 meters. Junior/sophomore Kari Prena (West Bloomfield Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Central) placed fourth (46.43m) and Liske took eighth (43.66m).
Junior/sophomore Kiley Tobel (Commerce Twp., Mich./Walled Lake Western) won the pole vault by clearing 3.95 meters, her outdoor season best. Freshman Victoria Wesley (Marine City, Mich./Marine City) tied for second by clearing 3.8 meters, with junior Morgan McNeil (Adrian, Mich./Madison) and freshman Meghan Lark (Livonia, Mich./Franklin) tying for sixth place (3.0m).
Fifth-year senior Allison Liske (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East) won the shot put with a throw of 15.19 meters.
Senior/junior Brianna Jenkins (Novi, Mich./Northville) tied for second in the high jump with her second-best mark of the season. She cleared the bar at 1.65 meters, .01 behind her season-best mark of 1.66 meters set at the Stanford Invitational (April 6). Eastern Michigan's Tatijana Jacobson won the event with leap over the bar at 1.7 meters.
The Wolverines return to the track at the Drake Relays. The three-day competition runs Thursday through Saturday (April 26-28) in Des Moines, Iowa.
