U-M Women Puts Up Five Top-Three Efforts on Day Four of Sea Ray Relays

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team registered five top-three finishes on the final day of the Sea Ray Relays on Saturday at LaPorte Stadium. Throughout the four-day event, the Wolverines tallied 13 top three-performances and 14 new personal records.
Michigan had two relays finish runner-up during Saturday's competition. The 4x400-meter relay team, which consisted of sophomore Amber Smith (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood), junior Charlotte Cahill (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), senior Brittani Williams (Detroit, Mich./Jackson) and junior/sophomore Jillian Smith (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) ran a season-best time of 3:43.68. The 4x800-meter relay, which competed for the first time this season, clocked a time of 8:54.65. The relay was made up of junior/sophomore Meg Bellino (Monroe, Mich./Catholic Central), freshman Michaela Carnegie (Beulah, Mich./Benzie Central), sophomore Alex Leptich (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) and sophomore Megan Weschler (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt).
In the showcase events, two Wolverines finished in the top three in their respective events. Jillian Smith placed third in the 1,500-meter run showcase in 4:21.96, while Amber Smith took third in the 400-meter hurdle showcase in a personal-best time of 1:00.31.
In the field, junior Erin Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore) finished third in the invitational section of the discus with a throw of 54.30 meters (178-2).
On Friday, Leptich secured Michigan's only individual win of the meet, taking the 1,500-meter run crown in a personal-best time of 4:28.53. Weschler followed Leptich across the finish line, finishing second in a career-best time of 4:32.03.
Junior/sophomore Lindsey Hilton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) recorded a runner-up finish, running an 11-second personal record of 9:54.72 in the 3,000-meter run. Cahill also improved her personal-best time, stopping the clock at 11.90 in the 100-meter dash to place fourth.
Senior/junior Brianna Jenkins (Novi, Mich./Northville) cleared a height of 1.65 meters (5-5) in the high jump, good enough for third place.
Three Wolverine freshmen made their event debuts at the Sea Ray Relays on Friday. Brook Handler (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) and Anna Pasternak (Brighton, Mich./Hartland) ran their first career 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing third and fifth, respectively, in times of 10:51.76 and 11:02.49. Carnegie ran a time of 2:12.76 in the 800-meter run to take third place.
Sophomore Erin Busbee (Cleveland, Ohio/Collinwood) competed in her first heptathlon of the season, finishing third after tallying 4,947 points. She took first place in four of the seven events and recorded five personal-best marks.
On Thursday, fifth-year senior Emily Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio/Woodmore) placed third in the hammer throw with a toss of 54.22 meters (177-11).
