LSSU Lakers win 19 events at Ferris State Bulldog Invitational

BIG RAPIDS - Lake Superior State won 19 events and broke five school records at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational held Saturday.
LSSU, Hope, Ferris State and several unattached competitors participated in the meet.
First-place finishers for the Lake Superior State women were Leslie Mitchell (100-meter dash, :12.31), Sashawna Bennett (200-meter dash, :25.18; and long jump, 5.32 meters), Elizabeth Dachs (3,000-meter run, 11:47.42), Shaina Walther, Sarah Gallagher, Michaela Newberry and Julia VandeKerkhove (4x400-meter relay, :4:12.60), Bennett, VandeKerkhove, Newberry and Mitchell (4x100-meter relay, :48.30), and Katie Winiarski (high jump, 1.61 meters; and triple jump, 11.4 meters).
LSSU men who won events were Ben Monroe (100-meter dash, :10.92; and 200-meter dash, :22.11), Zach Lynch (800-meter run, 1:57.36), Riley Lytwynec, Justin Balczak, Patrick Wright and Monroe (4x100-meter relay, :42.60), Lytwynec, Coleson Wenge, Wright and Lynch (4x400-meter relay, 3:28.15), Jeremy Braman (high jump, 1.97 meters), Jason Brenton (pole vault, 4.45 meters), Wright (long jump, 6.51 meters; and triple jump, 13.69 meters), Hans Riedel (discus throw, 42.72 meters) and Ben Charbonneau (javelin throw, 59.94 meters).
LSSU set new school records in the women's 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays. VandeKerkhove placed fourth and set a new LSSU record of 1:00.23 in the women's 400-meter dash. She bettered the old mark of 1:01.83 set by Dianna Kintz in 2003. Walther clocked a record time of 1:08.79 to place second in the women's 400-meter hurdles.
Brenton's winning height in the pole vault bettered the old LSSU mark of 4.42 meters set by Cale Gady in 1996.
