April 7, 2012 - The deep stable of sprinters and throwers helped the Hillsdale College men's track team to 77 points and a fifth-place finish at this weekend's Miami University Invitational in Oxford, Ohio.
Most of the Chargers' points in the two-day meet were earned in one of those two sections of the meet.
One of the meet highlights for Hillsdale came from the feet of Michael Finch, who took seventh place in the 400 with his first career sub-50 race. He finished with a time of 49.94 seconds, representing a nice breakthrough race for one of the team's most reliable sprinters in recent years.
Other sprinters who performed well included sophomore Maurice Jones (third in the 400, 48.03), teammates Michael Shaw and Skylar Dooley (sixth and seventh in the 200, respectively), senior Will Danko (seventh in the 100), and Matt Raffin in the 400 hurdles (fourth, 54.75 seconds).
Joining Mirth among the distance standouts were Jeff Wysong, who was fourth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:30.81, and Matthew Perkins, who took sixth in the 1500.
Sophomore John Banovetz had himself a solid day, scoring points in three events: the hammer throw, shot put and discus. He was sixth in the discus throw, and took eighth in the other two events.
The highest finish achieved by a runner from Hillsdale came in the longest race of the meet. Joshua Mirth finished second in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 31:58.16.
