Detroit Mercy Women -    Eastern Illinois Hosts Women's Track and Field

CHARLESTON, Ill. -- The women's track and field outdoor season began Friday and Saturday as the Toledo Collegiate Challenge and the Big Blue Classic, hosted by Eastern Illinois University, were the first events scheduled for the new season.



In the 100m preliminary races, Nikia Duncan won her heat with a new PR of 12.33 and setting the #5 all-time Titan best time. She then improved her PR in the finals to 12.30 and finished 8th bumping up to the #4 Titan all-time mark.



The outdoor season brought first-time events such as the hammer and discus throw and the steeple chase among other events including the second-ever running of the 4x400H relays.



In the 4x400H, the Titans came in third at 4:42.50 as Olivia Smid, Brandee Hart, Amanda Campbell and Sarah Martinez made up the four-person squad. Smid also ran in the 400H finishing at 1:08.59.



The 4x800m relay saw Sarah Martinez, Ciara Curley-Poppe, Hana Hunt and Katrina Oberski time in at 10.04.66.



In the 5000m, Zeinab Baydoun placed 15th clocking in at 19:04.77 while in the steeple chase, Oberski came in sixth setting a new PR of 11:41.08.



The 4x100m relay team of Duncan, Hart, Whitney Rogers and Nicole Meisner came in fifth at 48.86 as the group moved into the #11 Titan overall mark.



Kayla Zauner set a new PR in the pole vault with 4.83m. Rogers placed ninth with a 5.05m jump in the long jump and 10th in triple jump at 10.86m.



Highlights from Toledo included Allyson Koglin placing sixth in the discus throw tossing 39.21m while Stephanie Blanchard's shot put was launched 11.13m as she finished ninth. Koglin also finished ninth in the hammer throw. On the track, Rachel Hofsess ran 19:40.93 in the 5000m run while Sara Taylor made her debut in the 1500m race timing in at 5:27.90.



The next event for the track and field squads will be the annual home track and field event hosted on the University of Detroit Mercy Campus Saturday, April 7 (THIS SATURDAY). The team will welcome Oakland for a dual meet at Titan Field that will start at 3:00 p.m.
