NAPERVILLE, IL – A group of Calvin men’s and women’s track and field athletes competed at a last-chance meet hosted by North Central College Friday night, hoping to improve performances in order to qualify for the upcoming NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
One Calvin athlete who certainly increased his stock on Friday night was junior Matt VanderRoest who took first place in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:35.12. The time puts VanderRoest into the top 10 on the NCAA III indoor qualifying list and puts him in contention for a qualifying berth to next week’s national meet. Senior Dan Kerr was also fifth (14:54.55) and sophomore Sam Kerk seventh (15:06.38).
Junior Greg Whittle won the mile run with a time of 4:14.23. His time was not a season-best and places him squarely on the bubble for NCAA III qualification as he currently sits 12th on the qualifying list with a handful of last-chance meets still set to be run on Saturday.
In the men’s shot put, junior Aaron Meckes took third with a throw of 52-10 ¾. Meckes currently sits in eighth place on the NCAA III indoor list and is in contention for a qualifying spot.
In the women’s 5,000 meters, senior Jodi Hoekstra took third with a time of 17:38.63. She is currently in ninth place on the NCAA III indoor list and is contention for a qualifying spot. Sophomore Nicole Michermhuizen also ran a time of 17:51.10.
In the men’s high jump, sophomore Matt Christians placed 11th with a jumper 6-2 ¾.
The NCAA III Indoor Championships qualifying field is expected to be announced later this weekend.
