Chippewas Finish Competition at Va. Tech and Notre Dame

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Central Michigan indoor track and field student-athletes put forth strong efforts at the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier meet, but none of the three Chippewas in action clinched automatic qualifying berths to the NCAA National Championships.
Senior sprinter Kirlene Roberts finished third in her heat and 10th overall in the preliminary heats in the 60m dash in a time of 7.67 to advance to the semifinals. She posted a time of 7.68 in the semis with a fifth place finish in her heat and the ninth-best time in the semifinals. She was just one spot shy of qualifying for the finals.
Senior multi-event student-athlete Josh Kettlewell finished 14th in the pole vault with a mark of 16-02.5.
After leading late in the 60m hurdles, junior hurdler Renaldo Powell finished fourth in his heat with a time of 9.1 after falling going over the final hurdle.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Senior middle-distance runner Veronica Garcia finished 24th in the mile run on day two of the Alex Wilson Invitational with a time of 4:57.94.
Senior thrower Kevin Mays will compete in the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championships beginning Friday, March 9, in Nampa, Idaho. The meet is hosted by Boise State.
The outdoor track and field season will begin Saturday, March 23 at both LSU and Stanford.
