Allendale, Mich. - Senior Daniel Vanek continued his winning ways while two Lakers nearly set school records on day one of the 2012 GVSU Big Meet held inside the Kelly Family Sports Center on Friday (Feb. 10).
Vanek won the shot put with a toss of 19.00 meters, an NCAA Division II Championship automatic qualifying mark and a new Big Meet record, surpassing his own throw of 18.25 meters at last year's meet. The toss was only .09 meters behind his school record throw of 19.09 meters, set just a couple weeks ago.
While Vanek had the lone automatic qualifying mark of the event, 10 other student-athletes from the eighth-ranked NCAA Division II indoor track and field squad had provisional qualifying marks, one of which nearly resulted in a school record.
Senior Tyler Emmorey finished fifth in the one mile run with a time of 4:07.96, a provisional mark and only four tenths of a second back from Nate Peck's GVSU record set in 2006 (4:07.55). Peck also had his 3,000 meter record threatened as senior Anthony Witt ran the event in a time of 8:15.96, only .12 behind Peck's school record in the event (8:15.84), also set in 2006.
Senior Jeff Nordquist also hit a provisional mark in the one mile run, crossing the line in 4:10.62 to finish in 10th place. In the 5,000 meter event, a pair of seniors hit provisional qualifying marks as Nathan Knisely (14:33.71) and Ryan Toth (14:23.35) both finished in the top 10 of the event.
Sophomores Mohamed Mohamed (1:53.39) and Jeremy Wilk (1:53.55) each hit provisional marks in the 800 meter run while the final running provisional mark on the day belonged to the 4x400 relay team of Nathaniel Hammersmith, Deonte' Hurst, Mohamed and Logan Hoffman, who crossed the line in 3:17.26.
The remainder of the qualifying marks took place in the field events where junior Donny Stiffler had a toss of 17.23 meters in the shot put to finish fourth and junior Andrew Gorley hit a qualifying mark in the weight throw with a toss of 18.44 meters, a new personal best. A pair of pole vaulters also hit provisional marks as junior Raphael Gelo and sophomore Bret Myers both cleared 4.80 meters.
Day two of the Big Meet will get under way at 10 a.m. on Saturday (Feb. 11) in the Kelly Family Sports Center when GVSU's Steven Reives finishes up his work in the men's heptathlon. The remainder of the events will begin at 11 a.m.
