NOTRE DAME, Ind. - In the face of their toughest competition of the season, several student-athletes on the women's indoor track and field team turned in season- and career-best marks on day two of the Meyo Invitational on Saturday.
“The women are definitely young, but they're moving in a great direction,” Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Willie Randolph said. “The women had a solid day, not a great day. We have some things we need to work on, but we have a lot of good things that we're putting together.”
Sophomore Shawntoreah Turk finished 12th in the 400m dash with a personal and CMU season-best time of 55.99. She was just fractions of a second shy of her career-best time of 55.87.
Freshman Ravyn Baxter also turned in a strong performance in the 400m dash, finishing 36th in 57.43. Baxter's time is the second-fastest top time for CMU this season behind Turk's.
Turk and Baxter, along with senior Stephanie Hurley and freshman Bridget Doughty, combined for a season-best time of 3:49.64 in the 4x400m relay. The team finished third in its heat and 11th overall.
Senior Veronica Garcia ran a personal-best time of 2:14.36 in the 800m run, good for a 24th place finish. Garcia's time is also the fastest in the event for CMU this season.
The Chippewas are next in action this weekend as they travel to the Akron Invitational beginning Saturday, Feb. 11.
