Allendale, Mich. - The defending national champion women's team got 15 top five finishes at the Bob Eubanks Open inside the Kelly Family Sports Center on Friday (Jan. 13) afternoon, led by the Lakers' only victory of the day, Lauren Buresh's winning shot put of 14.90 meters.
Buresh's toss was enough for an NCAA Provisional mark but was not a personal best. Ashley Botham had two top five finishes, coming in fifth in the mile run (5:07.49) and crossing the line fourth in the 800 meter run (2:25.37). Chanelle Caldwell came in second in the 600 meter run (1:34.58) while Kalena Franklin hit a personal best with an 8.67 second performance in the 60 meter hurdles, an NCAA Provisional mark, to finish in third place.
Kristen Hixson finished fifth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.70 meters to hit an NCAA Provisional mark while teammate Jocelyn Kuksa hit a provisional mark of her own en route to finishing in third place with a height of 3.80 meters.
The Lakers placed three athletes in the top five of the weight throw competition as Sam Lockhart (18.83 meters) and Liz Murphy (18.63 meters) each hit NCAA Automatic qualifying marks and finished in third and fourth. Alyssa Zokoe came in fifth with a toss of 17.68 meters, a new personal best and an NCAA Provisional mark, while Jamie Smith's toss of 16.68 meters was also a provisional mark and good enough for eighth place.
Hannah Osborn had a pair of third place finishes, one in the 800 meter run (2:22.38) and another in the one mile run (5:06.24).
The women's team will be back in action next Friday (Jan. 20) for the Mike Lints Alumni Open, another home meet for the Lakers, with the first gun going off at 3 p.m. in the Kelly Family Sports Center.
