YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field named three former EMU athletes as volunteer assistant coaches for the 2011-12 season Head Coach Sue Parks announced. Coach Parks has named former track standouts Clint Allen, Matt Hammersmith and Jessica Hemingway as the women's volunteer assistants.

Allen was a standout sprinter and co-captain for the Eagles before graduating, including being crowned the 2011 MAC Championship in the 100-meter dash. Allen was named to the All-MAC First Team in every year at EMU with the exception of the 2009 outdoor season. His other accolades include winning multiple MAC titles in the 60-and 100-meter dashes. Allen is currently training to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Hammersmith was a captain of the cross country and track and field teams at Eastern Michigan before graduating in 2011. In his junior season he was named EMU's Most Improved Runner for Head Coach John Goodridge's cross country squad after being selected to the All-MAC Second Team. For the 2010 cross country season, he was given the Coaches Award after he helped lead EMU to their 15th MAC Championship. Hammersmith was also an Academic All-MAC performer for both track and field and cross country.

Hemingway holds the record for the highest pole vault in Eastern Michigan University history on the women's side after she cleared a bar at 13-07.50 during the 2011 indoor season and another bar at 13-11.25 during the 2011 outdoor campaign. Her record setting senior season led her to be the lone EMU athlete to compete at nationals where she placed 12th in the pole vault. Not only was the senior co-captain named to the All-MAC First Team for the first time, but was an All-American and named to the Academic All-MAC team. Hemingway is currently working toward qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials as well.

"We're excited to have three athletes on board who contributed to MAC Championship teams here at Eastern,” said coach Parks. “All three were team captains and team players who understand what it takes to win championships. I am confident that their attitude, work ethic and competitiveness will be a great example for our current athletes.”

The Green and White continue the indoor season Friday, Jan. 13, when it travels to Akron, Ohio for the Akron Opener. EMU will face Akron, Cincinnati, Robert Morris and Youngstown State in the meet, with the events beginning at 7 p.m.
