FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Micah Jones jumped 19-feet to set a new school record and win the long jump, to lead the Oakland track and field team at the Mastodon Opener hosted by IPFW on Saturday. Alex Katona had a pair of first place finishes, winning the 800-meter event in a time of 2:02.96 and the mile run in a time of 4:30.72.
"Micah Jones had quite a day," said Oakland head coach Paul Rice. "Not only did she shatter her school record in the long jump, she broke the record on three of her jumps. Overall, it was a nice start to the season for the small group that competed today."
Jones had jumps of 5.76 meters, 5.77 meters and won with a jump of 5.8 meters (19 feet) to beat Diona Grave of Miami (Ohio), who was second with a jump of 5.62 meters. Desiree Pettiford also gave OU a second place finish with her time of 26.83 in the 200-meter dash. Dave Magnotte was also second in the 3000 meters in a time of 8:55.14.
"Quite a few of our freshman wore the O for the first time today," said Rice. "It was real fun to watch them compete. I give my assistant coaches a ton of credit for helping get these athletes ready to start the season right. We are all looking forward to competing again in 2 weeks."
