Spokane, Wash. - The 3rd-ranked men's cross country team participated in the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship on Saturday (Nov. 19) and came away with a third place result, tying last year's accomplishment as the highest finish in program history.

The senior combination of Tyler Emmorey and Anthony Witt again led the way for GVSU, but it was the first time all year they did not finish next to each other in the final standings. Emmorey came across as the highest-finishing Laker, placing eighth with a time of 31:25.0, finishing 40 seconds behind the individual champion. Witt was 15th with a time of 31:41.6.

Junior Stephen Fuelling finished in 21st with a time of 31:50.7, followed closely by seniors Ryan Toth (25th; 31:56.7) and Nathan Knisely (31st; 32:01.9). All five scored runners for the Lakers will be named USTFCCCA All-Americans for finishing within the top 40.

The final two Lakers finished in 42nd and 44th, respectively, as sophomore Brent Showerman (32:21.6) and Larry Julson (32:26.5) rounded out the GVSU field.

GVSU was the only school to place all seven runners in the top 50 of the individual results, but it was Western State taking home the title with 27 points, placing five runners in the top 12. Adams State finished second with 69 points, placing their top five all within the top 30. The Lakers weren't far behind, registering 100 total points on the day. Chico State (110) and Colorado Mines (134) rounded out the top five of the standings.
