GVSU women Win 11th Straight GLIAC Championship

Ashland, Ohio - The second-ranked Grand Valley State women's cross country team placed seven runners in the top 10 to claim their 11th straight GLIAC Championship, finishing with an impressive 21 points at Brookside Golf Course.

Freshman Rachel Clark led the way for the Lakers, finishing in second place with a time of 21:38.89 to be named the GLIAC Women's Cross Country Freshman of the Year.

Finishing third was junior Monica Kinney with a time of 22:00.37 while freshman Callie Clark was fourth (22:02.51) and senior Rebecca Winchester finished fifth (22:08.22).

Also finishing in the top 10 for the Lakers were seniors Julia Nowak (seventh; 22:09.59) and Jessie Vickers (eighth; 22:12.40) and freshman Allyson Winchester (10th; 22:43.76).

GVSU placed seven runners in the top 10 and also had freshman Jordan Chester in 13th (22:59.86) and junior Karie McDonald in 14th (23:02.63). Freshman Hannah Osborn rounded out the field for the Lakers, finishing in 20th with a time of 23:30.72.

The Lakers dominated the field with 21 team points, outdistancing Ferris State in second with 57 points. Rounding out the top five in the team results were Saginaw Valley State (95), Wayne State (155) and Hillsdale (156).



"We had some outstanding efforts today from both squads in another muddy mess of a course," said reigning national coach of the year Jerry Baltes. "Our women raced with great focus and intensity from the start. They really set the tone early in race and did a great job racing together."

In the open competition, GVSU took the top 13 spots with senior Shaylee Vanderbaan winning the event in a time of 23:40.59.

The Lakers will now prepare for the NCAA Midwest Regional to be hosted in Big Rapids, Mich. on Saturday, November 5th.
