Calvin Men and Women compete at Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational

OSHKOSH, WI - Competing in a power-packed invitational, the Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams posted a pair of top-four finishes at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational Saturday morning. Wisconsin-Oshkosh will also serve as the host of the NCAA III Cross Country Championships on November 19.
On the men’s side, top-ranked North Central (IL) took first place with 49 points while fifth-ranked Washington University took second (137 points), 29th-ranked Wheaton took third (154 points) and third-ranked Calvin took fourth (156 points). Host Wisconsin-Oshkosh, ranked fifth, took fifth with 158 points.
On the women’s side, seventh-ranked Calvin took third with 188 points while third-ranked Washington University (Mo.) took first (61 points) and fifth-ranked MIT second (123 points). St. Olaf, ranked 13th, took fourth with 190 points while Ohio Northern was fifth (222 points).
Junior Matt VanderRoest (Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) led the Calvin men by placing third place individually with a time of 25:04, finishing only behind Michael Burstein of of Washington University and Tim Nelson of UW-Stout.
Junior Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) also had a top 10 individual finish for the Calvin men, placing sixth with a time of 25:12. The gap then grew for the Knights as junior Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS) was 41st (25:55), sophomore Sam Kerk (Hartland, WI) 52nd (26:05), junior Rhett Morici (St. Charles, IL) 58th (26:08), junior Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH) 61st (26:11) and junior David Vande Bunte (Byron Center HS) 76th (26:17).
In the women’s race, senior Jodi Hoekstra (Homer Glen, IL) was third individually to lead the Knights as she recorded a time of 21:56, only finishing behind Christy Cazzola of UW-Oshkosh who was second (21:43) and Erica Jackey of Washington University who was first (21:38).
Hoekstra formed a one-two punch up front with junior teammate Alyssa Penning (Grand Rapids Christian HS) who was sixth (22:05). Senior Kaitlin Diemer (South Christian HS) was next for Calvin in 28th (22:46). The gap then grew for Calvin as senior Eva Kort (Colorado Springs, CO) was 76th (23:24) and sophomore Alyssa Oram (Cheboygan) 77th (23:24). Rounding out Calvin’s top seven were senior Samantha Westveer (East Kentwood HS) in 94th (23:32) and junior Kaylea Brase (Lino Lakes, MN) in 97th (23:34).
Calvin will now break until October 29 when it competes at the MIAA Championships hosted by Alma College.
