South Bend, Ind. - The third-ranked Grand Valley State men's cross country team had a strong showing at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday (Sept. 30) as they battled high winds and wet conditions to claim a team victory.
The Lakers were once again led by seniors Tyler Emmorey and Anthony Witt who finished right next to each other, placing second and third. Emmorey finished with a time of 25:01, just seven seconds behind the winner while Witt ran the course in 25:04.
GVSU got a ninth place finish from junior Stephen Fuelling who finished in 25:21 while the final two Lakers who were scored finished 15th and 16th. Senior Nate Knisely finished in 25:31 while senior All-American Ryan Toth, in his first action of the season, finished with a time of 25:34.
Also with good finishes, but not counted in the team score, were sophomores Larry Julson and Brent Showerman who each finished with a time of 25:38. Senior Paul Zielinski wasn't far behind, finishing in 25:49. The final finisher for the Lakers was sophomore Josh Moskalewski who finished with a time of 26:14.
GVSU claimed the team trophy by accumulating 45 points, just in front of Windsor which finished with 50.
"Both squads put together solid races today," said head coach Jerry Baltes of his teams' performances. "The conditions were not good so we knew times were not going to be fast. We knew it would be a bit tactical early on and we had to be ready to move in the second half of the race. We did a great job of racing together and moving up. We feel we are in a good position now and we just need to keep training and making steady progress."
The team will take to the course again next Friday (Oct. 7) when they participate in the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships in Hillsdale, Mich. at 4 p.m.
