EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Western Michigan cross country team wrapped up the Spartan Invitational 6k at the Forest Akers East Golf Course on the campus of Michigan State on Friday afternoon.
Rachel Whitley and Amber Brunmeier competed for to a photo finish to pace the Broncos. Both registered a time of 22:04 but Whitley was officially ruled to finish just ahead of her in 36th place. It is the first time this season and in her career that Whitley has finished at the top of WMU's top five.
"Rachel has great sprint speed that we have seen during the track and field," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "She did a great job of catching Amber and has really picked it up after a slow start."
Sophomore Liza Boudreau saw improvement and finished 64th overall with a time of 22:37 and finishing the race strong. Sophomores Aisha Hodge and Chelsie Noble, along with junior Jeriesha Tucker, all finished together with a time of 23:10 to round out the top five for WMU.
"We took a different approach to this meet since we knew it wasn't going to be scored," added coach Lycan. "We tried to go fast out of the gate and it worked well for some of our runners. We did a good job of going out aggressively and I think the team learned that they can finish strong after an aggressive start."
Samantha Tomerlin, who exhausted her cross country eligibility but will still compete for WMU during the outdoor track and field season, finished fourth overall with a time of 20:49.
The Broncos have a weekend off next week before heading to the Notre Dame Invitational.
