Cross Country Hosts Record-Setting Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State cross country program held its annual Spartan Invitational on Friday at Forest Akers East Golf Course on the University campus. Over 4,800 athletes and 300 teams, covering college, high school and middle school age groups competed this afternoon, setting a new high mark for participants.

Beginning the day was the collegiate men's 8k race. Four Spartans finished in the top-15 in the only home race of the season. Leading the pack was redshirt freshman Alex Wilson who finished sixth overall in a time of 24:46.

Junior Kevin Yarnell was on Wilson's heels, placing seventh in 24:48. Redshirt junior Isaiah Vandoorne posted a top-10 finish, crossing in 24:51, good for 10th place. Rounding out the top group for MSU, redshirt senior Joe Dimambro was 13th in 24:56.

A pair of redshirt freshman made solid debuts as attached runners, as David Madrigal was 20th in 25:06 and Ben Carruthers was 21st in 25:08. Redshirt junior Josh McAlary (26th; 25:15) and redshirt senior Aaron Simoneau (29th; 25:22) concluded the top-30 finishers for Michigan State.

Eastern Michigan's Terefe Ejigu took the individual title with a time of 24:23, three seconds ahead of Central Michigan's Tecumseh Adams.

On the women's side, redshirt senior Carlie Green was the top collegiate finisher, and second overall, with a time of 20:33. Only Rachel Patterson (20:16), running unattached, topped Green. It was a career best finish for Green, who also ran her fastest time at the Forest Akers course, and her second fastest time ever.

Sophomores Julia Otwell and Sara Knoll each set personal bests to finish sixth and seventh, with times of 20:51 and 20:53, respectively. Redshirt senior Rebekah Smeltzer was the fourth Spartan in the top-10, crossing in 21:07 to finish ninth.

Three more Spartans placed within the top-20, as redshirt junior Rachel McFarlane was 11th in 21:14, redshirt freshman Leah O'Connor was 15th in 21:21 and redshirt sophomore Megan Rodgers was 18th in 21:29.
