Wolverines Sweep Top Six Spots in Team Victory at Orange & Blue Preview

URBANA, Ill. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team claimed the top six spots and the team title at the Illinois Orange & Blue Preview on Friday (Sept. 16) at the 6,000-meter University of Illinois Arboretum. Eight of the top-10 finishers were sporting the Maize and Blue in the 6,000-meter race, which was held at the site of the Big Ten Championships on Oct. 30.
Michigan registered just 15 points in the Big Ten battle, followed by Illinois with 49 and Wisconsin with 83.
For the second straight week, fifth-year senior Danielle Tauro (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional HS) paced the Wolverines, winning the individual title with a time of 20:19. Junior Rebecca Addison (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven HS), 20:26, followed on Tauro's heals, finishing second with a time of 20:26.
Sophomore/freshmen Taylor Pogue (Goodrich, Mich./Goodrich), 20:34, and Megan Weschler (Wyandotta, Mich./Roosevelt HS), 21:05, ran strong for the second consecutive weekend, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Senior Mary Grace Pellegrini (Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual) finished fifth with a time of 21:12, followed by freshman Ellen Junewick (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) at 21:23.
Rounding out Michigan's harriers in the top 10 were junior Lindsey Hilton (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska), finishing eighth with a time of 21:29, and freshman Brook Handler (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) in ninth at 21:47.
Tauro, Addison, Pellegrini and junior/sophomore Chloe Prince (Okemos, Mich./Okemos), 22:36, all ran personal-best times en route to the team victory. For Weschler, Pogue, Junewick, Handler, and sophomore/freshman Nicola Hallenborg (Summit, N.J./Summit), 22:00, the meet marked their first career competition at 6,000 meters and against Big Ten opponents.
The Wolverines will take a two-week break before returning to action on Saturday (Oct. 1) at Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky. The 6,000-meter race is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park.
