Saginaw Valley Sate University captured thc annual men's and women's Indoor track championships held at Hillsdale College's Jesse Phillps Arena Saturday, Feb. 22 In Hillsdale, Michigan. The Cardinals won their first men's Indoor title since 1986 over last year's champion, Ashland University, by one point, 154.00 to 153.00. Overall It was SVSU's eighth GLIAC men's Indoor championship. The Lady Cardinals won their second ever title with 142.66 points, 21.66 pointe better than host Hillsdale. SVSU won the Inaugural GLIAC women's indoor meet in 1984.
The GLIAC men's and women's track coaches recognized Saginaw Valley State's efforts by selecting Cardinal Head Coach Jlm Nesbitt as GLIAC Coach-of-The-Year In both sports. This Is Nesbitt's second selection as men's Coach-Of-The-Year (1989) and first on the women's side. Two Ashland student athletes senior 0liver Grund (Kasset. Germany) and junior Randy Benedict (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg) were named the 1997 Mens Co-Athletes-Of-The-Meet. Grund won the 5000 run at 14:52.40. He is the 1996 GLIAC Men's Cross Country Champion and the 1996 GLIAC Outstanding Runner-Of-The-Year. Benedict successfully defended his Individual titles In the 3,000 run (8:46.30) and mile run (4:15.10) and ran a leg on Ashland's winning 3 200 relay squad (7:47.30). Benedict finished second to Grund at thc 1996 GLIAC men's cross country championship meet. Saginaw Valley State senior Angie Sneider (Penysburg, OH/Morenci) was named the 1997 Women's Athlete-Of-The-Meet after suscessfully defending her1996 title on the long lump 18'11-1/2", and taking the triple jump championship with a 35'11-3/4" mark. Ashland junlor Becky Ball (Marblehead, OH/Danburgs) successfully defended her 20-pound weight GLIAC title wlth a new NCAA-II national record toss of 02'8-1/2". That the third time this season Ball has set the record. |
