Western Michigan senior Phil McMullen (Cadillac, Mich.) recorded his
second decathlon win this season and probably the most important of his
career as he captured the title at the Penn Relays on Wednesday in
Philadelphia. McMullen finished with 7,723 points which was the
second-highest collegiate total in meet history and 247 points better
than the two-time defending champion Jamie Cook (7,476 points) of Penn
State who finished second. A dramatic shift in the weather may have cost McMullen a chance at the meet record as he fell 48 points shy of breaking the mark of 7,770 points set by William Motti of Mount St. Mary's in 1985. McMullen entered the second day trailing Jeremy Culver of Kutztown State (Pa.) by 58 points for the overall lead. He overtook Culver after the first event the 110-meter hurdles as he finished with a time of :15.08. His marks by event were: :11.58 in the 100 meters, 22-6 in the long jump, 46-10 3/4 in the shot put, 6-4 3/4 in the high jump, 49.88 in the 400 meters, :15.08 in the 110-meter hurdles, 159-5 in the discus, 14-9 in the pole vault, 168-2 in the javelin and 4:16.68 in the 1,500 meters. Earlier this season at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. (April 8-9), McMullen recorded the best decathlon performance (8,008 points) in the NCAA this year. With that effort he qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships to be held in Buffalo, N.Y., on June 3-6 and the USTFF Senior Track and Field Championships to be held June 17-21 in New Orleans. McMullen will graduate from Western Michigan University on Saturday (April 25) with a degree in Integrated supply management. -WMU- |
