THREE RIVERS, Mich. -- The second-ranked University of Michigan
women's cross country team won its fourth straight event of 1998 and
repeated as the Michigan Intercollegiate champion, scoring 34 points on
Friday (Oct. 9) to finish 52 points ahead of the 24-team field. It marks
the second straight Michigan Intercollegiate title for coach Mike
McGuire's squad and the 11th time in 12 years that U-M has won the annual
event, hosted this year by Western Michigan University.
The Wolverines placed all five scorers in the top 15, led by senior
Katie McGregor (Willoughby, Oiho/Willoughby South HS), the
defending Intercollegiate champion who finished second. Junior
Elizabeth Kampfe (Decatur, Ill./MacArthur HS) placed third,
senior Michelle Slater (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams HS), a
1995 All-American, finished sixth and sophomore Lisa Ouellet
(Sudbury, Ontario/Lasalle SS) was ninth.

NOTES
In the 12-year history of the Michigan Intercollegiate Championship,
the Wolverines have won the meet 11 times. From 1987 to 1995, U-M won all
nine Intercollegiates. U-M finished second with 45 points in 1996 and then
regained the title in 1997 with a meet-record 19 points.
Friday's win for Michigan marked its fourth in as many tries this
season. The Wolverines also won the Indiana State Sycamore Pride Classic
(Sept. 5), Bowling Green Invitational (Sept. 12) and Sundodger
Invitational (Sept. 26). McGregor won the first three individual titles
before finishing runnerup on Friday. Kampfe was runnerup at Indiana State
and Bowling Green, while placing third at the Sunddoger and
Intercollegiate meets.
Michigan will host the Wolverine Interregional on Oct. 18 at the U-M
Golf Course. Fifteen teams are schedule to run in the women's 5,000-meter
race, including seven ranked teams: No. 2 Michigan, No. 7 Wake Forest, No.
8 Georgetown, No. 14 Washington, No. 18 William and Mary, No. 23 Florida
and No. 24 Bowling Green.
