Men's Cross Country Team Tunes Up for 1998 Season

ANN ARBOR, MICH. -- The University of Michigan men's cross country team opened the 1998 season at home with the Michigan Open on Saturday (Sept. 5). A non-scoring meet, the 5.1 mile race was held at the Michigan Golf Course and featured two Wolverine All-Americans in seniors Todd Snyder (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and John Mortimer (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry HS). Snyder won the race in 26:11, followed by fifth-year senior Don McLaughlin (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS). Mortimer finished fifth in 26:49. Freshman Mark Pilja (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) was third overall with a time of 26:43.

The Wolverines will enjoy a two-week hiatus before heading west to defend their title at Montana's Mountain West Classic. Mortimer, the individual champion last year, will return to defend the individual crown as well.
