Michigan Women Win Third Big Ten Outdoor Championship
- Columbus, OH -- For the third time in six years, Michigan's
women's track squad has spent a weekend in late May chasing and capturing
the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championship. Just as was the case in
1993 and 1994, the Wolverines proved too much for the rest of the
conference as they rode their depth to 129.50 points and a satisfying
victory. Reigning Big Ten outdoor conference champion Wisconsin earned
runner-up status with 117 points while Illinois provided stiff competition
in third with 115 points. Michigan left no doubt they are the dominant Big
Ten squad of 1998 after winning both the indoor and outdoor Big Ten
championships.
- In addition to her victory in the long jump, Tania Longe (Sellebakk,
Norway/St. Olav) delivered her third consecutive conference title in the
heptathlon with 5267 points. Along with her two victories, Longe aided the
Maize and Blue cause with a fifth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles
(14.08) and a third place finish in the triple jump (41-4 1/2). Just as
important as Longe's win in the heptathlon was the fact that Michigan took
four of the eight scoring positions in that event. Also scoring in the
heptathlon for the Wolverines was Olive Ikeh (Plymouth, MI/Canton HS) in
third (4932), Tiffany Hodge (Menominee, MI/Menominee HS) in sixth (3736)
and Shaunetta Smith (Detroit, MI/Mumford HS) in seventh (3694).
- Michigan's other top point producer was three-time All-American Katie
McGregor (Willoughby, OH/Willoughby South HS), who added to her
performance in the 3000-meter run yesterday with a runner-up effort in the
5000-meter run in 16:37.49 as well as a third place finish in the
1500-meter run in 4:22.97.
- Another runner-up finish was also key to Michgan's effort as Nicole
Forrester (Cookstown, ONT/Banting HS) came in second in the high jump with
a leap of 5-11 1/4. After finishing as runner-up in the 10,000-meter run
on Friday evening, Elizabeth Kampfe (Decatur, IL/MacArthur HS) returned on
Sunday afternoon to finish sixth in the 5000-meter run (17:18.13). Fellow
distance standout Michelle Slater (Rochester Hills, MI/Adams HS) again
played a key role in the championship effort as she scored in the
1500-meter and 3000-meter runs.
- Notes:
- -- Longe now has earned nine career Big Ten championships, most in the
history of the program.
- -- This is the second time Michigan has won both the indoor and
outdoor Big Ten championships in the same year, with 1994 being the other.
- -- 21 Wolverines scored in the 17 individual events.
- -- Michigan now has three Big Ten crowns in the outdoor season
(1993,94,98) to go along with three in the indoor season (1983,94,98).
Sans the 1983 squad, each championships squad was guided by Head Coach
James Henry
