Michigan Sprinters Looking Strong

Ann Arbor, MI -- While much of Michigan's attention has been focused on the distance group along with their All-America field athletes, the Wolverine sprinters have been quietly getting the job done in impressive fashion.

Sophomore Maria Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Immaculate Conception) had her best day as a Wolverine as she set one personal record and matched another. First, Brown won the 100-meter dash with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 11.43, which is a personal record. She followed that up with a victory in the 200-meter dash, matching her personal record of 23.76. Brown is also part of the 4 x 100-meter relay team that has set a Michigan record as well as provisionally qualified for NCAAs.

Joining Brown as Maize and Blue victors on the afternoon was Brandi Bentley (Detroit, MI/Marian HS) as she improved her own personal record in the long jump with a leap of 19-9. Her previous best was 19-2 1/2. Bentley will team with Big Ten indoor long jump champion Tania Longe (Sellebakk, Norway/St. Olav) to form a strong one-two punch in that event at next weekend's Big Ten Outdoor Championships at Ohio State University. Longe, competing in her final home meet, rested up for the Big Ten Outdoor Championships by only competing in the shot put on the afternoon and finished second with a toss of 43-9 1/4.

Notes:

-- Brown is now third on the Big Ten performance list in the 100-meter dash and 25th nationally

-- Bentley's leap of 19-9 in the long jump puts her third on the Big Ten performance list.

-- Nicole Proulx (Standish, MI/Standish-Sterling HS) gave her best effort as a Wolverine in the shot put with a toss of 39-3 1/4.
