McGregor Gives Michigan Women Their First Ever Individual NCAA
National Champion and Best Team Finish
- Indianapolis, IN-- A pair of national championships culminates
the Wolverines incredible indoor campaign with their best-ever national
finish of fifth. Michigan's previous best national finish was a seventh
place finish in 1994, a year that produced the Maize and Blue's only
national champion prior to this record setting 1998 squad.
- Just one day after anchoring the national champion distance medley
relay squad, Katie McGregor (Willoughby, OH/Willoughby South HS) gains
another NCAA title by running the best 3000-meters of her life in just
9:24.68. Earlier this season, McGregor ran a new personal best 9:25.55
which allowed her to qualify for the chance at a national crown. McGregor
became the first Wolverine woman to win an individual NCAA track
championship since Michigan women's track affiliation with the NCAA began
in 1983. McGregor, a junior, earned her first track and field All-America
honor last year in the outdoor season with an eighth place finish in the
5000-meter run.
- Also an All-America last season in the outdoor campaign, Nicole
Forrester (Cookstown, ONT/Banting HS) now can add indoor high jump
All-America to her growing list of accolades. The junior high jumper
finished in a tie for sixth with a leap of 5-11 1/2. The only Wolverine
competing this weekend not to earn All-America honors was senior Tania
Longe (Sellebakk, Norway/St. Olav), who competed in the triple jump. Two
weeks after carrying the Wolverines to a Big Ten Championship with three
victories, Longe finished 15th in the triple jump with an effort of 40-4
3/4
- NOTES:
- -- After McGregor, the closest any Wolverine came to a national title
were a pair of runner-up finishers: Sue Schroeder twice in the outdoor
5000-meter run (1985 & 86) and Sonya Payne in the shot put (1988)
- -- McGregor is the first Wolverine to ever win two national
championships, this year's distance medley relay and 3000-meter run.
- -- Forrester is only the second jumper to earn a second All-America
selection. The other was Monica Black in 1995 & 96
- -- Forrester set the Michigan indoor high jump record earlier this
season (6-1 1/4)
- -- All six Michigan athletes to earn All-America status are
underclassman: McGregor (jr.), Kampfe (so.), Forrester (jr.), Hamilton
(jr.), Ouellet (so.) and Hunter (fr.)
-- Six All-Americas equals the most Michigan has ever produced in one
season with 1994
