Wolverine Duo Shines in Final Home Meet

Ann Arbor, MI -- A pair of Michigan middle distance stalwarts, Kevin Sullivan (Brantford, ONT/North Park) and Don McLaughlin (Ann Arbor, MI/Pioneer HS), delivered powerful performances at the Len Paddock Invitational. Both seniors, running in their final home meet, earned NCAA provisional qualifying times in the 800-meter run.

Sullivan led the way with a first place finish in 1:47.77 while McLaughlin followed close behind finishing in third with a pace of 1:48.63. Both times were each athletes best 800-meters of the 1998 outdoor campaign. Sullivan's effort is even more impressive considering he ran the fastest 1500-meters in the nation this year the night before. Sullivan is now 11th nationally in the 800-meter run while McLaughlin is 21st.

Another senior, Brian Theisen (Ft. Wayne, IN/Homestead HS), also running in his final home meet, was part of three other Michigan victories. Theisen ran his quickest 110-meter hurdles as a Wolverine to garner the victory in 14:03.00. Theisen also anchored each of Michigan's victorious relay teams. First, Theisen ran the final leg of the 4 x 100-meter relay and helped Michigan to the win in 40.90. Joining Theisen on the 4 x 100-meter foursome was Steve Jenkins (Detroit, MI/Cass Tech HS), Martin Bowman (New Providence, NJ/New Providence HS) and Kevin Bowman (New Providence, NJ/New Providence HS). Theisen then finished off the meet by taking care of the anchor leg in the 4 x 400-meter relay which the Maize and Blue also won with a time of 3:13.63.

Notes:

-- Sullivan and McLaughlin are now numbers one and three, respectively, on the Big Ten performance list in the 800-meter run.

-- Sullivan and McLaughlin are the last two Big Ten champions in the indoor mile.

-- Theisen's time of 14.03 in the 110-meter hurdles vaults up to fourth on the Big Ten performance list heading into next weekend's Big Ten Championships at Ohio State University.

-- Michigan's 4 x 100-meter relay group gave their best effort of 1998 with their time of 40.90. That time is good for third on the Big Ten performance list.
