Sullivan's Final Home Race One for the Ages

Ann Arbor, MI -- In his final home meet as a Michigan Wolverine, Kevin Sullivan (Brantford, ONT/Noth Park) went out just as he should, as a champion.

While winning the 1500-m run on the first night of competition at the Len Paddock Invitational, Sullivan set a new Ferry Field record with his pace of 3:36.62. The old record of 3:39.22 was set by Sullivan himself back in 1994. In addition, Sullivan is now automatically qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Buffalo, NY on June 3-6. Sullivan was pulled out to a quick pace early in the race by teammate John Mortimer (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry HS) and then trailed David Krummenacker of Georgia Tech around the final turn. However, Sullivan put on a great burst down the final straight away to pull away from Krummenacker and post his best 1500-m time of 1998. The Sullivan-Krummenacker matchup was a classic duel that pitted the 1998 indoor 800-meter national champion (Krummenacker) against the 1998 indoor mile national champion (Sullivan). Sullivan's time of 3:36.62 is the fastest in the nation in 1998 by nearly three seconds.

The initial night of competition at the Len Paddock Invitational provided the Wolverines with one other very notable performance. Freshman Andy Derr (Lititz, PA/Warwick HS) improved his personal record in the javelin with a toss of 201-10, which garnered him a second place finish.

Notes:

-- Sullivan owns the Michigan outdoor 1500-meter record of 3:35.77, which he set back in 1995.

-- Derr's toss has put him among the top eight on the Big Ten performance list.
