- After Week Off, Men's Squad Splits Up
The University of Michigan men's track team has a final weekend off April
11-12 before finishing the outdoor season with seven consecutive meets.
Michigan will resume its outdoor season in two weeks when assistant coach
Ron Warhurst will take his talented distance group to the Mt. SAC Relays
in Walnut, Calif., April 17 and 18. That same weekend the rest of the
track team will travel an hour north to East Lansing, Mich., for the
Michigan State Invitational.
- Third Place Finish For Men
- The April 4 four-way meet involving Michigan, Ohio State, USC and
Arizona saw the two Big Ten institutions finish third and fourth as the
Pac Ten schools took home the victory in the Big Ten/Pac Ten Challenge
portion of the meet in Los Angeles, Calif. As for the quadrangular
scoring, the Wolverines finished third behind winner Arizona and runner-up
Southern California. Michigan ended up earning 35 points while Arizona won
the four-way meet with 78 points. Arizona barely edged out host Southern
California, who came away with 71 points. Ohio State finished in fourth
with 19 points.
- Sullivan Earns Difficult Double
- Michigan all-everything distance runner Kevin Sullivan (Brantford,
ONT/North Park) earned a very difficult double victory April 4 by winning
the 1500-meter and 800-m runs within an hour and half of each other.
First, Sullivan set a new USC Cromwell Field Record in the 1500-m run with
a pace of 3:43.95. That time is the third-best time in the nation for 1998
and was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Sullivan, the four-time NCAA
national champion, then ran a terrific come-from-behind race in the 800-m
run to edge out Arizona's Patrick Nduwimana down the stretch with a time
of 1:49.24. Each event time was Sullivan's best of the young 1998 outdoor
campaign.
- Wolverines Have Initial NCAA Qualifier
- Junior John Mortimer (Londonderry, NH/Londonderry HS) became the first
NCAA National Outdoor Championships atuomatic qualifier for the Maize and
Blue. Mortimer began the day for Michigan with a dominating victory in the
3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:43.5 which is the best 1998 time
in the nation and automatically qualifies Mortimer for the NCAA
championships. The 3000-m steeplechase became Mortimer's specialty after
he won the Big Ten title last year and finishing third at the NCAA
championships as a sophomore.
