Wolverines Grab Victories in Four Events at Michigan State Invitational

East Lansing, MI -- In order to compete for a Big Ten championship, Michigan needs it's sprinters and field athletes to step their level of performance up a notch and they did exactly that at the Michigan State Invitational.

With their dominant distance teammates at the Mt. SAC relays in California, the Wolverines received four victories from their sprint and field athletes, the most victories produced by those groups this season. Of Michigan's four wins on the afternoon, two came from freshmen. Pole vaulter Charles DeWildt (Wyoming, MI/Grand Rapids CC) notched another victory in what has become a solid freshman campaign with a leap of 16-2 3/4. Joining DeWildt as a freshman victor is Josh Sellers (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee HS), with his first win as a Wolverine in the 400-meter hurdles (54.15).

Michigan's other individual victory came from senior Taiwo Okusanya (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison HS) in the triple jump with a leap of 44-6 1/4. The Wolverines also gained a win in the 4x400-meter relay with a pace of 3:14.24. Other solid performances for the Maize and Blue included freshman hurdler Jon Cohen (London, ONT/Lucas HS) with a second place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (15.33). In addition, long sprinter Ricky Turner (Grand Rapids, MI/City HS) continues his improvement with a third place finish in the 400-meter dash in a time of 48.36.

Notes:
-- Dewildt's victory was his third of the season and first during the outdoor portion of the schedule
-- Okusanya enjoyed the first win of his senior campaign.
-- In three weeks, freshman Sellers has improved his time in the 400-meter hurdles by more than three seconds. Sellers ran only a 57.90 at the Arizona State Invitational less than a month ago.
