Michigan's two 1998 indoor track and field national champions have each also notched the Big Ten Track and Field Athlete of the Month honors for March for both men and women. Katie McGregor (Willoughby, OH/Willoughby South HS) earned athlete of the month recognition after becoming the first individual NCAA national champion from the Wolverine women's track program. McGregor accomplished this feat in the 3000-meter run with her personal best time of 9:24.68. In addition, the junior distance runner ran the anchor leg of a mile for Michigan's national champion distance medley relay team. That foursome not only won the national title, but they also set a NCAA Indoor Championship meet and Michigan record with a time of 11:03.28. McGregor qualified for the NCAA championship in the mile run as well.
Joining his fellow Wolverine as Big Ten Track and Field Athlete of the Month for the men is Kevin Sullivan (Brantford, ONT/North Park HS), who now has claimed this conference honor for three consecutive months. Sullivan enjoyed one of the best months a Michigan athlete has had in recent memory during March. First, Sullivan won his second national championship in the mile run with a time of 4:03.01. That victory made Sullivan the first Wolverine in history to garner four NCAA track and field national championships. Like McGregor, Sullivan also anchors the men's distance medley relay team which finished third at the NCAA Indoor Championship with a pace of 9:36.84. Those two performances gave Sullivan his ninth and tenth All-America selections as well as helped him be named the 1998 Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track Coaches Association.
