Wolverines Open Outdoor Campaign
- Tempe, AZ -- In their initial outdoor meet of 1998, Michigan's
men's track squad was primarily represented by their deep distance group
on the first day of the two day Arizona State Castillo Invitational.
- The finest Michigan effort on the first day of competition came in
the 1500-meter run where two Wolverine veterans finished among the top
six. With Kevin Sullivan (Brantford, ONT/North Park), the 1997 NCAA
runner-up in the 1500-meter run, sitting this one out, John Mortimer
(Londonderry, NH/Londonderry HS) represented Michigan with a fifth place
finish in 3:50.02 while fellow All-American Don McLaughlin (Ann Arbor,
MI/Pioneer HS) crossed the finish line on Mortimer's heels in sixth with a
pace of 3:50.24.
- A pair of fourth place finishers gave Michigan their highest
places during the first day of action. Junior Todd Snyder (Ann Arbor,
MI/Pioneer HS) came back strong after sitting out much of the indoor
season with an excellent pace of 14:21.40 in the 5000-meter run. Joining
Snyder as a fourth place finisher was freshman Andrew Derr (Lititz,
PA/Warwick HS) with a toss of 184-02 in his first collegiate javelin
competition.
- Notes:
- -- Derr's javelin throw of 184-02 is almost 35 feet better the best
Wolverine throw in 1997.
- -- Snyder's time of 14:21.40 is more than 25 seconds faster than his
best 5000-meters in 1997.
