Sullivan's Wins Mile Run To Help Michigan To Sixth Place Finish
Nationally
- Indianapolis, IN -- Only once since the NCAA began a men's
indoor championship for track and field have the Wolverines enjoyed a
better finish than this year's sixth place finish. The 1995 squad finished
fourth in the nation to give the Maize and Blue their best finish since
the NCAA Indoor Championships began in 1965. The sixth place finish
allows the Wolverines to swallow their disappointing sixth place Big Ten
finish a little bit easier.
- Michigan superstar Kevin Sullivan (Brantford, ONT/North Park) did not
dissapoint in his final appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championship. After
anchoring the final leg for the Wolverines third place distance medley
relay team last night, Sullivan returned to win his second NCAA title in
the mile run with a time of 4:03.54 on Saturday afternoon. Sullivan's
victory came in the most exciting race of the weekend and one of the more
exciting mile runs in NCAA Indoor Championship history. Sullivan's much
anticipated duel with Seneca Lassiter of Arkasnas turned into a three man
race down the stretch as the three milers finished within six
one-hundredths of a second apart. Bryan Berryhill of Colorado State
finished second at 4:03.55 while Lassiter followed those two with a time
of 4:03.60. Sullivan's other title in the mile run came when he set an
NCAA Indoor Championship meet record in 1995 at a pace of 3:55.33.
- NOTES:
- -- Sullivan now has four NCAA track championships. The other three
being the indoor mile, indoor distance medley relay and outdoor 1500-meter
run, all of which happened in 1995.
- -- Mortimer is only the third Wolverine to earn All-America honors in
the 5000-meter run
- -- Sullivan is the first Wolverine in history to record four NCAA
track titles, numerous Michigan athletes have won three crowns.
- -- Sullivan is Michigan's only champion ever in the indoor mile
- -- Sullivan entered the championship with the best 3000-meter time
(7:51.65) in the country but chose not to run the race so he could
concentrate on the distance medley relay and mile run
- -- Sullivan has now become a 10-time NCAA track and field All-American
- -- Michigan's 1978 team also finished sixth at NCAA Indoor
Championship
