Grand Rapid, Michigan - The '98 Old Kent River Bank Run had quite a show on Saturday with Joesph Kariuki from Kenya setting a new world record in the 25K. Kariuki covered the 25K course in 1 hour 13 minutes and 55 seconds, out pacing second place, Stephen Nyamu also of Kenya, by over 2 minutes. The women's 25K was a closer race with Margaret Kagiri, Kenya, taking first in 1:28:46. Only 20 seconds behind Kagirie was the first American Shelly Steely of New Mexico in 1:29:06.
The '98 Old Kent River Bank Run was also the site of the USATF 25K National Championship. John Sence of Cincinnati, took home the National Title for the second year in a row and finished 3rd overall in a time of 1:16:15. The women's title went to Shelly Steely.
A record crowd of 9,789 runners and walkers participated in this year Old Kent River Bank event, shattering the old record by more than 2,000 people.
